One day in every man’s lifetime, he will decide that he would like to be more stylish and better dressed.
This realization is often followed up by another for many men:
It is likely that you don’t know what to do when shopping for men’s clothing.
One of the most important tenets in menswear is that not all clothes can be made equal.
If they were, then you would have as much respect for your friend in baggy cargo pants and loose-fitting tanktop as for your friend in a perfectly tailored three-piece suit.
However, the devil is in all the details. Many men soon realize that their lack of knowledge about how to shop and what to look for when shopping for men’s clothes.
What Men Need to Know about Clothes Shopping
After years of studying style guides like Esquire and GQ, combined with a lot more time than most people should spend shopping at the mall, I have come to realize five key points men need to remember when shopping for men’s clothing.
Let’s find out what’s important when shopping for clothes that will make you feel confident.
How to Buy Men’s Clothes
The Five Factors that Matter Most
How to Buy Men’s Clothes
1. The Most Important Factor by Far! Fit is King
It is important to consider the fit of your clothing when deciding whether to spend your hard earned money on it.
A sweater can look great on one man if it fits his shoulders and torso perfectly, compliments his arms, and wraps around his neck.
If the sweater drapes over his shoulders as a gown or billows from his hips, it can make a huge difference on another man.
When trying on a new item, be sure to measure it correctly before making any other decisions.
If you’re a slimmer guy, it might be worth reducing the size of your clothes.
Growing up as a skinny kid, my family would buy me clothes that were one or more sizes larger than I needed. This was because they believed that I would “grow into” it.
And although I did grow, my basic proportions remained the same – my shoulders were not wider and my arms weren’t any longer.
I continued to look absurd in large sweaters, which I was supposed to “grow into”, well into my 20s.
After accepting that I am a small in some cases and not a medium in others, I began to develop a more refined profile.
You may find the opposite to be true for those at the other end.
Even though a medium once fit you well, it doesn’t mean that it will continue to fit you. At some point you might have to change to a large to ensure your clothes fit your frame properly without getting in the way.

2. Selecting Colors That Complement You
Over the years, people (and I mainly mean my mom) would buy me orange or red shirts and sweaters.
I don’t really know why these colors were chosen. However, bright colors seem to be a popular choice and attract potential buyers.
I was ashamed to admit that I would have had to put these shaming gifts in the bottom of my drawer or return them to try and exchange them.
There’s nothing wrong with orange and red, but they don’t match my skin tone.
3. How to create a unique look for you
You can find everything from tailored Hawaiian shirts to fur-lined jeans jackets in the store, as well as a wide range of other clothing pieces that would look amazing on you.
How do I find out? Because they aren’t in my Personal Style Profile.
The Personal Style Profile is a blueprint for how you look. It helps you feel confident and comfortable.
It helps you make sure you feel good about the clothes you put on.
4. Finding the Right Feeling
I confess that I have a weakness for the button-up shirts at H&M, which retail for about 15 dollars.
They fit perfectly (which is crucial) and come in colors which complement my complexion.
H&M sells those shirts at such a low price because they cut corners on the fabric.
The shirt is made from a lightweight synthetic material that feels lighter than cotton.
One, it’s light enough to almost see through, and flashing your nips at a young man who is concerned about his fashion is not a good idea.
It feels more like I’m in a cheap Halloween costume rather than a professionally put together outfit.
Fit and color are both important. But, it is also important to consider the material of your clothes.
The touch of a piece is the most important thing. If you take care of it well, it will last longer.
5. What should you spend?
It isn’t an accident that the price ranks last on this list.
This is a good rule to remember when it comes down to the price of clothes.
Cheap clothes are almost always made at a bargain price, so be wary if it is too expensive.
High quality does not always come with a high price tag, and that is the key.
Many menswear brands charge high prices for their merchandise, not because their design, fit and construction justifies it, but because the brand wants you to believe that they do.
Positioning is an important concept in sales and marketing. We assume that there’s a reason for a product to be priced high. It makes us more likely, without really thinking about it, to buy it.
You can find great pieces without spending a lot if you just follow these simple steps: Look for sales whenever possible and be sensitive about the price of your clothes.
Keep in mind, though, that the devil is not in the details, no matter how much you spend.
