When to give Christmas gifts?

This could be an odd question, and it could be. It’s true that we all have our customs and the majority of people know the best time to gift Christmas presents, (after lunch on Christmas day, isn’t it?) until you find someone with whom you share customs differ.

My family’s home was where I grew up and we used to find Christmas stockings at the foot of the mattress at the time of Christmas (a tradition that continued for many years into adulthood) They were gifts from Santa and could be opened right away. You could then pick one present from the Christmas tree to open the next morning (usually selected very carefully) and the rest could be kept until lunchtime.

When we visited family members and friends in the days before Christmas, we were able to open gifts that received in person however, for grandparents or the gifts that were presented in the absence of us, they were put under the tree, to be opened on Christmas Eve.

My husband’s family however, did open all of their presents Christmas morning . They even had the small distinction of stockings prior to breakfast, and presents following.

Different Traditions

These two traditions were easy to blend together. What happens if you and your partner’s family was giving gifts on Christmas Eve? It’s a common practice in many countries , and it is practiced for the royalty. There are many families that allow the opening of a single gift on Christmas Eve. It could be an exclusive Christmas Eve box or festive pyjamas, or even gifts from someone who you won’t meet on Christmas day.

Some people put off gift-giving up to the day 12 of the Christmas season (or even give it away over 12 days) While other traditions offer gifts that are given out from the 5th day of December, when kids leave their shoes or boots out to St Nicholas.

While some families accept gifts from others upon receiving them, received, others are quite certain about keeping them for the big day.

When can you start giving out gifts?

No matter when you decide to present gifts to your family, there are bound to be some people you gift gifts to but aren’t able to see on Christmas Day.
