If you can carry them around in your pocket, Pokemon aren’t “Pocket Monsters”. Pokeball is an invention that allows you to store any Pokemon inside. There are several versions of the Pokeball. You can also make them out of nuts or organic material. The Pokeball’s inner workings remain a mystery.
There are many theories about what happens inside Pokeballs. From the little information we have from interviews and in-game data, we can determine what the Pokeball’s environment looks like.
What Pokemon Shown Us About the Inside of Pokeballs
We know very little about Pokeballs. If the ball hits a Pokemon they are transformed into energy and sent flying within it. At least that is what the anime says. In the games, Pokemon shrink into the balls. The ball catches them inside. All this shows that the ball can transform creatures into its own body.
In Pokemon anime, the only thing inside a Pokeball is its mechanical interiors. Creatures are rarely seen inside Pokeballs. Misty’s Psyduck appears to have captured himself in one of her Pokeballs. This episode is merely a stylized representation of the possibilities.
One thing is certain: Pokemon can be turned into energy and kept in the ball. The Pokemon world has proven it can convert physical matter into energy for transport. As shown by the Pokemon Transfer System, how Pokeballs are created in players’ boxes when they have six or more Pokemon and how psychic move “Teleport” affects Pokemon. Pokeballs seem to turn Pokemon into energy and they don’t shrink down in size.
Pokeballs are very comfortable.
There are some little tidbits that can be found about Pokeballs’ insides. Junichi Masuda from Pokemon Sun and Moon was the first to describe how he felt the insides of Pokeballs. Perhaps it’s the equivalent to a high-end suite in a fine hotel.
This could indicate that the Pokeball space is artificially created to appeal to every Pokemon. Pokeballs are essentially virtual realities that create the ideal environment for each Pokemon. These ecosystems are created for comfort, providing a private, comfortable environment for their inhabitants.
This doesn’t mean all Pokemon will love the environment. Ash’s Pikachu hates being enclosed in a Pokeball. The one in Pokemon Yellow is the same as Ash. However, many Pokemon in-game want to be outside of Pokeballs so they can interact and learn from humans. Pokeballs were designed to make a comfortable environment. This is why it is thought that Pikachu doesn’t like being contained in a Pokeball. While it isn’t known whether the Pokemon can interact with the Pokeballs that contain other Pokemon, there are PokePelago spaces for PC-bound Pokemon. In anime and games, trainers allow their Pokemon to interact with each other outside of Pokeballs. As shown in Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Pokemon Camp feature, Pokemon can freely move around and have fun together.
Pokeballs can be considered to be comfortable, but not intended for long-term containment.
